COVID-19
21 February 2021
As Coronavirus, also know as COVID-19, continues to spread in the UK the charity will be posting updates and advice specifically for people diagnosed with cardiomyopathy or myocarditis.
The symptoms of the virus are the same as we have previously reported. They include coughing, sneezing, high fever and shortness of breath. The symptoms are similar to other illnesses that are much more common such as cold or flu.
The current evidence is still that most cases appear to be mild but people with weakened immune systems, older people and those with long term conditions such as cardiomyopathy and myocarditis may experience complications. For this reason, if you have cardiomyopathy or myocarditis it is important that you;
- Are extra vigilant and strictly follow government guidance on infection control (you can find this here). If possible you should avoid large gatherings, public transport and people with any signs of cold or flu symptoms.
- Call NHS 111 at the first sign of any symptoms, no matter how mild, and make sure that the NHS 111 service knows about your cardiomyopathy and any other underlying health conditions which you may have.
- Continue taking all your usual medication as normal.
- It is possible that hospitals may need to cancel some outpatient appointments. It is a good idea to phone ahead of your appointment to see if it has been postponed or if alternative arrangements are in place.
We will continue to provide advice and in the meantime please ensure you are up-to-date with the latest government information and advice which you can find here.
